President Bola Tinubu reassured members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) of his commitment to media freedom and constructive criticism during a meeting in Abuja on Monday.
President Tinubu addressed concerns about existing regulations affecting the paper industry, promising to consider NPAN’s request for a policy review. Emphasizing the importance of a transparent government, he acknowledged challenges faced by travellers during the festive season and outlined measures to alleviate transportation costs and reduce the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
”I read every paper, various opinions, and columnists. I thank you for your support and opinions, even the criticism of our government. Without the support of some of you, I will not be standing here as president,” President Tinubu stated.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to economic revitalization, he cited bold decisions such as ending the petrol subsidy regime and unifying foreign exchange rates. He pledged a transparent government and expressed determination to address challenges, stating, ”I promise you a very transparent government. We will try our best to draw water from a dry well and create a good economic environment that will serve the people.”
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to a vibrant and responsible media landscape. He emphasized the vital role of the media in upholding transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information in a thriving democracy.
NPAN president, Mr. Kabiru Yusuf, congratulated President Tinubu on his election victory and Supreme Court affirmation. However, he raised concerns about challenges facing the newspaper industry, stressing its significance in democracy and as a reliable source of information amid the prevalence of fake news.
In conclusion, Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), echoed the commitment of the administration to dialogue, collaboration, and addressing challenges to ensure a robust and democratic media environment.
