Taiwo Gbolahan, a first-year student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), tragically passed away after he was crushed by a trailer on Friday morning along Ikole secretariat road, Ekiti State.
It was gathered that the deceased, who was the class governor of quantity survey, was on his way to submit an assignment when he met his untimely death.
The university has confirmed the news and has sent condolences to the family.
Prof Dosu Malomo, The Dean of Student Affairs, in a statement said “The University has received the sad news of the loss of one our students in a ghastly motor accident on Ikole-Oye highway today.
“This is in spite of the spirited and prompt efforts of the Directorate of University Medical Services to render help and convey the student to the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido for comprehensive attention.
“The Vice- Chancellor and the entire University send its condolences for this unfortunate loss.
“Consequently, I wish to declare that tomorrow, Saturday the 17th of December is hereby declared a lecture free day as a mark of respect for the lost soul.
“Please, rest assured that the University as a tradition will pay the parents a condolence visit immediately and equally improve on any matter which border on welfare and the comfort of all students.
“Immediately the news got to the University management, we sent ambulance and logistics to admit the deceased at Federal Medical centre Ido-Ekiti. His parents were informed and his daddy was at the hospital, the University shouldered the hospital bill and treatment for him began earnestly,” the Special Adviser on Media Matters to the Vice-Chancellor, Wole Balogun, said.
According to a course mate, he died on his way to submit an assignment.
The student said: “We lost our class governor in the early hours of today, he died on his way to submit an assignment.
“Our lecturer had insisted that the assignment must be submitted before 8AM and he asked all of us to submit our assignments to our class governor who must bring his office before the stipulated time.”
“Gbolahan had to take a bike to meet up with the deadline. Sadly, a trailer rammed into the bike he boarded and crushed him to death.”
