U.S. President Joe Biden had a meeting with African leaders during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Thursday.
It’s been a week-long event.
Nigerians have taken to social media to give their opinions about President Buhari’s choice of attire among other Heads of State.
While other African leaders sported dapper suits, the Nigerian leader was in his traditional Nigerian attire. And this hasn’t gone unnoticed.
@EditiEffiong said: “One thing I like about Buhari, he will not wear a suit for anybody.”
@xygort: “Do you see how Ramaphosa is looking at him in that picture? Typical example of what he could possibly be thinking.
“There’s a reason they’re all wearing suits. It’s a formal meeting”.
@AugustFlare: “A Suit is the best neutral clothing there is. The Japanese wear it for international outings instead of traditional Kimono. Also Chinese, Russians etc. Nigeria doesn’t have a “Culture”, it’s 100s of cultures. That clothing doesn’t represent Nigeria, it represents the Northerners”.
@AdeolaSoji: “I think this is typical of all Nigerian Presidents. Obasanjo was always in his agbada, Yar’Adua always in Babanringa, Jonathan always in his Ijaw Senator, Buhari always in his Kaftan, and lastly Peter Obi, always in his Black Senator. They’re all good ambassadors of our cultures”.
@IbomPrincess_ “Ofcourse: He is representing the Nigerian culture. There might a special code in the constitution that on official assignments Nigerian Presidents and Ministers have to dress in their native attire and that is great.”
@zLm4: “I like this quality about him. It means he’s true to himself and his beliefs. Whether that has positive or negative connotations for governance is another matter.”
@AnieManny: “Somebody said it’s because when they will be asking questions they won’t call on him, they will know he didn’t come for business but to mark register.”
@EngrAkindele: “I think it is traditional for northerners to wear their own wears always. I think the northerners are the least enslaved with the western mode of dressing.”
@Mr_optimistic4: “So now… not wearing suit is also a prblm? Pls someone shuld help explain to me why Buhari must dress like a white man. We were all made to think suit must b worn for any official meeting, dat’s mental slavery Sha. White man making us feel his way of life is the right way of life.”
