During the 27th Pre-Convocation briefing held in Abuja on October 4, 2023, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, made a significant announcement regarding the admission process.
He unveiled a new requirement that all prospective students seeking admission must undergo a mandatory drug test. This decision reflects the university’s commitment to addressing the serious issue of drug abuse among its student body.
Prof. Na’allah emphasized the importance of monitoring the drug status of students as a proactive measure to ensure a drug-free environment within the institution. Rather than taking a punitive approach, the university is taking a compassionate stance by partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to provide support and rehabilitation for students who may test positive for drug use. This approach aligns with the university’s mission to help students overcome challenges and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
It’s important to note that the Vice Chancellor clarified that students found to be involved in drug abuse will not face immediate expulsion. Instead, they will be offered rehabilitation services in collaboration with the NDLEA. This approach underscores the university’s commitment to the overall well-being of its students, acknowledging that addiction is a complex issue that requires assistance and guidance.
The University of Abuja’s initiative sets a commendable example of how educational institutions can address social challenges while upholding their duty to educate and support their students.
