In a significant move to streamline revenue collection processes and eliminate unauthorized extortion within Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma has issued a stern directive, prohibiting all non-authorized entities or individuals from collecting levies.
The governor’s firm stance on the matter is aimed at safeguarding the state’s reputation and restoring transparency to revenue collection practices.
Governor Uzodimma conveyed his message unequivocally, warning that those engaged in reckless levy collection without the explicit authorization of his office must halt their activities immediately or face serious repercussions. The governor emphasized that his administration will no longer tolerate actions that tarnish the state’s image.
Of particular concern to Governor Uzodimma are reports of individuals, groups, and even political appointees using the guise of taskforces to intimidate the public and unlawfully collect levies, imposing penalties that are both illegal and criminal. He underscored that the sole authorized body responsible for revenue collection in Imo State is the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS).

Governor Uzodimma’s resolve is unwavering as he declared that anyone found involved in further unlawful levy collections, regardless of their status, will be held accountable. The governor expressed particular concern about the proliferation of unauthorized levy collections in specific sectors. These include the haulage and trucking industry, where both daytime and nighttime collections have run rampant, as well as municipal daily ticketing within parks and markets. He also highlighted the activities of groups targeting transportation traffic offenders.
To enforce his directive, Governor Uzodimma has instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to immediately cease any involvement in unauthorized levy collection. He reinforced the message that those who dare to challenge his resolve by continuing these illegal practices will bear the consequences of their actions.
