The Oluwole Market in Ogba, Lagos, witnessed a tumultuous disruption of peace and commerce as clashes erupted between Yoruba and Hausa communities, resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread destruction of property.
The confrontation, which began on Thursday night and escalated into Friday morning, led to the untimely demise of a young man, intensifying existing tensions between the two groups.
According to reports from Daily Trust, the conflict reportedly ignited when a Yoruba man, identified as Abbey, intervened in a dispute between two Hausa individuals. Tragically, Abbey suffered fatal injuries after allegedly being stabbed by an unidentified assailant during the intervention.
The news of Abbey’s death quickly escalated the situation, sparking a retaliatory onslaught between Yoruba and Hausa residents within the vicinity of the market.
The reprisal attacks resulted in extensive damage to property, particularly targeting food items such as peppers, onions, and other commodities sold by Hausa traders within the Oluwole Market.
As a result of the clashes, commercial activities in the area came to a grinding halt, causing significant disruption and instilling fear among local residents.
Eyewitnesses recounted a heightened police presence in the market vicinity, with patrol vans deployed to quell the unrest and restore order to the embattled community.
