In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court has confirmed Caleb Mutfwang as the legitimate Governor of Plateau State, reinstating his victory from the March 18, 2023 election.
As gathered by Quest Times, the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos had earlier upheld Mutfwang’s win, but the appeal court overturned this decision, declaring Nentawe Goshwe of the All Progressives Congress as the winner.
The appeal court argued that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) breached the law by not complying with the Plateau State High Court’s order to conduct valid ward, local government, and state congresses before nominating candidates.
However, the Supreme Court, in its recent judgment, emphasized that the APC and its candidate were not members of the PDP and therefore could not challenge the PDP’s primary election.
Justice Emmanuel Agim stated that both the tribunal and the court of appeal lacked jurisdiction to address this issue, considering it an abuse of the court process.
“The petition by the APC and its candidates are abuse of the court process,” he said.
Expressing concern for those affected by the legal dispute, Justice John Okoro agreed with the lead judgment, emphasizing the unnecessary hardship caused by the matter.
