Star actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, has opened up on her relationship with her husband, singer Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W.
Adesua during a service at the Waterbrooks Church in Lagos, shared that she had “friend-zoned” Banky W for a year and a half before finally accepting his marriage proposal.
The screen diva explained that one of the reasons she kept Banky W in the friend zone was because she had not received a clear message from God about their relationship at that time. She emphasized the importance of friendship in laying the foundation of a strong relationship:
“I would like to say that friendship plays a very big role in laying the foundation of your relationship. I friend-zoned my husband for a year and a half”, Adesua said.
She humorously revealed three reasons for keeping Banky W at a distance. First was that she wanted to be certain that she had received divine guidance regarding their compatibility. The second reason given was that she expressed concerns about marrying someone as famous as Banky W, considering her already chaotic life and lastly, she wanted to establish a genuine friendship before diving into a romantic relationship:

“I friend-zoned him for two reasons. One, I wasn’t sure that I had heard from God about whether this person was actually my person. Actually, three reasons. Second, marrying Banky W (laughs). I was like, ‘My life on my own is chaotic enough, I would now marry Banky? No, no, no.’
“And then thirdly, just trying to at least have a friendship, and I honestly believe that the friendship we laid over a year and a half has played a very big role in how our relationship is today. Banky W is my guy. I mean if you take away romance and sex and everything that makes a marriage, he would still be my guy. Banky is my best friend.”
Banky W playfully chimed in, urging them not to exclude the importance of sex in their relationship:
“No, leave sex. Don’t take it away (laughs).”
It would be recalled that the couple, who captivated audiences with their onscreen chemistry in the movie ‘The Wedding Party,’ tied the knot on November 19th, 2017, in a lavish ceremony attended by numerous celebrities. In January 2021, they welcomed their first child, a son named “Hazaiah.”
Adesua Etomi-Wellington’s revelation about “friendzoning” Banky W sheds light on the importance of friendship and the gradual development of a strong foundation in a romantic relationship. Their story keeps inspiring many couples seeking a solid and lasting connection.
