The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, on Monday, suspended three lawmakers amidst claims of an alleged scheme to impeach him and other key figures in the Assembly.
Blessing Agbebaku, in a statement, announced the suspension, pointing fingers at the trio for orchestrating a plot to destabilize the Assembly’s leadership.
Among the suspended lawmakers is Donald Okogbe, representing PDP, Akoko-Edo II constituency, who notably abstained from endorsing the petition that led to the impeachment of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, marking him as an ally to the ousted official.
Accusations didn’t stop there; Agbebaku further alleged that the trio, including Addeh Emankhu Isibor of APC, Esan North-East I, and Iyamu Bright of PDP, Orhionnwon II, brought traditional healers into the Assembly premises in the wee hours of May 1st to perform obscure rituals.
The move, however, didn’t sit well with the affected legislators, who vehemently opposed their suspension during a tumultuous session. Shouts filled the chambers as the suspended lawmakers demanded a vote on the matter, accusing the Speaker of acting unilaterally.
Amidst the chaos, the Speaker abruptly adjourned the session, leaving unresolved tension looming over the Assembly’s future proceedings.
