Former senator who represented Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has cautioned president Bola Tinubu and other leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against meddling in the governance affairs of Niger Republic.
As part of the resolutions of an extraordinary meeting of the leaders at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, to discuss developments in Niger, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government had on Sunday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Niger’s military to release and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and Government.
Failure to do so, ECOWAS led by President Tinubu had vowed to use all means necessary to restore democratic governance, including use of force.
Taking to his Twitter page, Sani also warned the federal government against withdrawing power supply to Niger Republic, saying electricity should not be used as a ‘means of political blackmail’.
He tweeted “The reported Nigerian alleged tempering with electricity supply to Niger Republic is wrong. We must not use power supplies as a means of political blackmail. It will not change anything”.
“If Niger decides to build their power station across their part of the River Niger, our Kainji Dam will be rendered useless”.
“President Tinubu and Ecowas leaders should allow the People of Niger to decide on how they want their country to be governed”.
“Don’t be instigated by France to go to war that we don’t need. When we had military regime, we fought to free ourselves;let them make their decisions”.
