Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, who was detained by members of his guard after being ousted last month, received a medical evaluation from his doctor on Saturday, according to sources within his entourage.
His well-being has been a growing concern, and his doctor’s visit included provisions of food for both Bazoum and his wife and son, who are also in detention with him.
Despite the challenging circumstances, a member of his close circle stated that the president is in a stable condition, considering the situation at hand.
Apprehensions have escalated regarding the health and treatment conditions of President Bazoum, his wife, and his 20-year-old son, ever since they were taken into custody by the military on July 26 following a coup. The European Union, the African Union, and various other entities have expressed deep concern over their status.

Volker Turk, the UN’s chief of human rights, raised alarms about the reported conditions of President Bazoum’s detention, highlighting the potential violation of international human rights standards due to the treatment he is enduring.
Antony Blinken, a prominent US diplomat, expressed disappointment at the military’s refusal to release Bazoum’s family, characterizing it as a missed opportunity to demonstrate goodwill.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) engaged with President Bazoum earlier in the week, during which the 63-year-old leader conveyed that he, along with his wife and son, has been subjected to treatment that he described as “inhuman and cruel.”
A recent report by CNN disclosed that Bazoum has been kept in isolation and forced to consume dry rice and pasta by those who orchestrated his overthrow.
