Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Olumide Akpata has declared his intention to contend for the governorship position in the Edo 2024 election.
At a gathering held within the confines of the Labor Party’s secretariat in Benin City, Akpata made his official announcement on a Thursday, emphasizing his deep-rooted commitment to improving the lives of Edo State residents as his primary motivation.
Akpata will run under the Labor Party, and his decision stems from his conviction that it is the sole political entity genuinely dedicated to the welfare of everyday citizens.

He said: “My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out in politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. Nobody cares about the people.
“So, when I look around, the only party I find to be people-oriented and interested in the lots of our people is Labour Party.
“So I have come here to express my interest and to carry the people along,” he said.
The state chairman of the Labour Party, Kelly Ogbaloi, extended a warm welcome to Akpata, confirming the party’s working committee’s endorsement of his gubernatorial aspirations. Ogbaloi assured all potential candidates of a fair and equitable playing field during the party’s primary election.
