On Thursday, 470 motorcycles were impounded by the Joint Task Force of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for operating illegally in the capital city, Abuja.
It was gathered that the Taskforce operation began from the Carwash Bus Stop, Lugbe, through Gosa, Bill Clinton Drive, Trademore Estate, Lugbe Junction and Kubwa.
Similarly, on 31st August, over 400 motorcycles were also impounded and crushed, during an operation for the same offence.
The Secretary, Transportation Secretariat, FCTA, Mr. Obokutom Nyah, told newsmen during the exercise that the decision to impound the motorcycles was in accordance with the provisions of the law.
The secretary further warned commercial motorcyclists to restrict their operations to certain areas, while emphasizing that they should stay clear of the city centre and stop constituting a security threat in the city.
He noted that there are areas in Abuja designated for different kinds of vehicles, adding that commercial motorcycles are only allowed to operate in small communities.
He said, “So, we encourage the operators to respect their boundaries because if you cross the line, you will face the full wrath of the law”.
Also, Mr Abdulateef Bello, the Director, FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services, said that the number of motorcycles operating within the city was unthinkable.
Furthermore, Bello explained that the task force would extend its operations to night hours, adding that currently, between 200 and 400 motorcycles are being impounded on a weekly basis. They are also considering arresting residents that patronize motorcycles to enforce the order.
Residents were strongly advised to stop patronizing motorcycles but should endeavor to walk short distances where possible, for their own safety.
The director advised business owners not to venture into the commercial motorcycle business, stressing that the FCTA would invest its resources in curbing their activities.
