A devastating fire swept through the Alfa Yahaya area of Ilorin, Kwara State, destroying property valued at N23.8 million on Saturday.
The blaze, ignited by an electrical fault, wreaked havoc on seven flats and two shops at number 5, Ado compound, as learned by Quest Times.
Three of the flats were ravaged by the flames, while the two shops suffered complete destruction, consuming various items within.
Among the losses were drugs, furniture, and assorted drinks, totaling the estimated N23.8 million in damages.
Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, praising the swift and effective response of the fire service team, which managed to minimize the overall damage.
Adekunle revealed, “The firemen were able to perform excellently well to minimise the damage, therefore other rooms in the building including many tangible properties were saved from the scathed fire. Total estimated property saved is N47.4 million and total estimated property lost is N23.8 million,” adding that the fire’s origin was traced to a power surge in the area.
Also, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of Kwara State Fire Service, emphasized the importance of preventive measures.
He urged citizens to develop the habit of switching off electrical appliances before bedtime, citing it as a crucial step in averting potential fire outbreaks in homes and offices.
