Manchester United managed to break their winless streak with a late goal from Bruno Fernandes. The Red Devils, facing mounting pressure on their manager, had recently suffered consecutive 3-0 defeats against Manchester City and Newcastle, which had raised questions about their performance.
One notable absence from the squad was Marcus Rashford, who had been criticized by the manager for celebrating his birthday after the City defeat.
However, Man Utd explained his absence as an injury.
Garnacho replaced Rashford on the left wing as Scott McTominay resumed back in the midfield position alongside Christian Eriksen.
Scott McTominay was first to break the deadlock after scoring a tap-in from Garnacho’s assist. However, a prolonged VAR review ruled Harry Maguire offside in the build-up which led to the goal being disallowed.
Manchester United struggled to create chances until the dying moments of the game when Joao Palhinha’s clearance found Fernandes on the edge of the area. The captain slotted the ball inside the near post, giving his embattled manager some much-needed relief.
