Counsel for embattled Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, Olumide Adeyinka-Fusika (SAN), has said he is unaware that the police have seized his client’s gun license.
He told PUNCH newspaper that he saw no link between his client’s case of assaulting a policeman and a gun license.
PUNCH quotes an impeccable source as disclosing that policemen seized Seun’s gun license during a search of the musician’s house in Ikeja on Tuesday.
“The officers that searched Seun Kuti’s home on Tuesday only found a gun license, and they seized it. I can confirm that the command is currently working on revoking the license,” the source said.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to inquiries concerning the incident as of press time.
When contacted, Seun Kuti’s lawyer, Olumide-Fusika said, “Regrettably, I’m not aware of this. However, a license is not a gun. A gun license is a mere piece of paper authorising the bearer or licensee to own and have possession of a specified piece of arm (gun).
“Besides, what’s the connection between the allegation of slapping a policeman and police seizure of his gun license?”
The SAN, however, did not respond to inquiries about the musician’s bail, as police order for his detention elapses today (Thursday).
A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba had on Tuesday granted an order for the musician to be remanded in police custody for 48 hours.
The magistrate said, “The defendant is hereby remanded for 48 hours in police custody to allow the police to conclude their investigation. After 48 hours, his bail will take effect.”
