The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu, finds himself at the center of a political storm as 21 members of the State House of Assembly serve him with a notice of impeachment.
This development comes in the wake of heightened tensions following Shaibu’s organization of a separate Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in the state.
The notice of impeachment cites “gross misconduct” on the part of Deputy Governor Shuaibu, although specific details regarding the alleged misconduct remain undisclosed at this stage.
Shuaibu, a prominent figure in Edo politics, has long been a close ally of Governor Godwin Obaseki. However, their once-strong alliance soured when the Governor declined to support Shaibu’s bid for governorship.
Observers speculate that the impeachment move stems from underlying political disagreements between the two leaders.
The State House of Assembly, comprising 24 members, mandates a two-thirds majority for a successful impeachment.
