The Lagos State Safety Commission and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) are intensifying efforts to curb indoor smoking in nightclubs, bars, and lounges across the state.
This decision follows a collaborative resolve announced by Mr. Lanre Mojola, Director General of the Safety Commission, and Dr. Tunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, during a safety workshop aimed at enhancing safety standards within the hospitality sector in Lagos State.
Mr. Mojola emphasized the need for Nigerians to adhere to regulations, citing international best practices. He stressed the importance of designated smoking areas within hotels to ensure the comfort and health of all patrons.
According to him, “There is no doubt, Lagos State will enforce indoor smoking at Night clubs, bars and lounges because it is high time we do our business as the law stipulates but not as we want it to be done, especially in Lagos State where safety and health of all the citizens is of utmost concern of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration”.
Echoing Mr. Mojola’s sentiments, Dr. Ajayi reiterated the enforcement of indoor smoking restrictions in nightlife establishments. He noted that non-compliance with safety regulations would result in stringent penalties.
The workshop also featured input from industry experts, including Mr. Ehi Iden, Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Mr. Yomi Ayoola, Hospitality Consultant, and representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Among the recommendations put forward was the installation of visible signage indicating entry and exit points in nightlife venues to prevent chaos during emergencies. This proactive approach aims to foster a customer-friendly and safety-conscious environment within the hospitality sector.
