Manchester United has released a statement indicating that no decision has been reached regarding the future of Mason Greenwood, as the ultimate decision rests with CEO Richard Arnold.
The club’s senior officials had initially intended to communicate the outcome of a comprehensive six-and-a-half month investigation into Greenwood’s situation before the start of the new season. However, the announcement has been postponed.
In February 2023, Greater Manchester Police dropped all charges against 21-year-old Greenwood, including attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault. Greenwood had consistently denied all allegations.
Since January 22, 2022, Greenwood has not participated in any matches for Manchester United, and he has not returned to training with the club. The ultimate determination of Greenwood’s status will be made by the Chief Executive Officer, Richard Arnold.
A statement released by United on Wednesday afternoon said: “Following the dropping of all charges against Mason Greenwood in February 2023, Manchester United has conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations made against him.
“This has drawn on extensive evidence and context not in the public domain, and we have heard from numerous people with direct involvement or knowledge of the case.

“Throughout this process, the welfare and perspective of the alleged victim has been central to the club’s inquiries, and we respect her right to lifelong anonymity.
“We also have responsibilities to Mason as an employee, as a young person who has been with the club since the age of seven, and as a new father with a partner.
“The fact-finding phase of our investigation is now complete, and we are in the final stages of making a decision on Mason’s future.
“Contrary to media speculation, that decision has not yet been made and is currently the subject of intensive internal deliberation. Responsibility ultimately rests with the Chief Executive Officer.
“Once made, the decision will be communicated and explained to the club’s internal and external stakeholders.
“This has been a difficult case for everyone associated with Manchester United, and we understand the strong opinions it has provoked based on the partial evidence in the public domain. We ask for patience as we work through the final stages of this carefully considered process.”
Acknowledging the challenging nature of the case, United asked for patience as they navigate the final stages of the decision-making process. It also reiterated Greenwood’s denial of all allegations and expressed gratitude for the support received.
Greenwood has continued to train outside the club’s facilities, with data from his training sessions being sent to Manchester United. He remains under contract until 2025, with the option for an additional year, and has not played for the club since January 22, 2022.
Throughout his career with United, Greenwood has made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals. He made his England debut in September 2020 against Iceland.
