The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its efforts against former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, over allegations of financial misconduct.
According to EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, Bello is under global scrutiny for suspected fraudulent activities, indicating a concerted push to bring him to justice.
Olukoyede, speaking to journalists, expressed bewilderment at Bello’s reluctance to subject himself to investigation despite the accusations.
He underscored the transient nature of immunity, cautioning that legal protections could expire.
Moreover, he alleged that Governor Usman Ododo facilitated Bello’s evasion of EFCC scrutiny, backed by compelling forensic evidence.
In addressing Ododo’s purported involvement, Olukoyede remarked, “If you have immunity today, it doesn’t mean you would have immunity tomorrow…The world is looking at us. Some people went to carry placards and were protesting, they sold out their conscience. For how much?”
The EFCC chief reiterated the presence of incriminating forensic data implicating Bello. He argued that had Bello cooperated with authorities, there would have been no need for a manhunt. “We have forensic evidence. If he (Bello) had surrendered himself, there would have been no reason to declare him wanted. He has been watchlisted all over the world. He can only run. Why is he not submitting himself to the law? Why is he not coming out?”
The EFCC’s pursuit centers on 19 counts of money laundering and embezzlement, totaling N80 billion allegedly misappropriated from Kogi’s coffers.
