In a move to address the nationwide strike that is set to commence on Tuesday, November 14, the Organised Labour has scheduled a press conference. The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, revealed this during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in Abuja.
The decision for the nationwide strike was made following a meeting of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership in Abuja on Tuesday. Expressing their dissatisfaction, organised labour unions have begun mobilizing members and allies across the country.
This decision comes after the brutal attack on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State last week. Organised Labour strongly criticized the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, accusing him of complicity in the assault.
Last Friday, Organised Labour issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde. They also held the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, accountable for the attack on Ajaero, a claim the governor vehemently denied.
Seeking justice, Organised Labour demanded the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, threatening a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not met. During the meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Ugboaja urged him to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the attack on the NLC president.
