On Wednesday, a final-year student identified as Olayinka Emmanuel Olatunji, studying English at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), took his own life while documenting the horrific process.
The incident unfolded when he shared a distressing video on the class group WhatsApp platform from his home, revealing the consumption of a harmful substance later identified as sniper.
Consequently, his concerned coursemates immediately rallied to reach out to him, only to receive the heartbreaking news of his untimely demise as a result of the toxic ingestion.
It was reportedly suggested that various pressures around him, including social circles and financial struggles, may have driven the young student to end his life.
Additionally, speculations within the class WhatsApp platform equally pointed towards Emmanuel’s battle with depression, likely worsened by his challenges in securing the necessary funds to continue his academic study.
According to an anonymous secondary school classmate of Emmanuel, it was shared that he had been battling with depression for some time.
Also, Emmanuel had even expressed his concerns about feeling targeted by certain groups and celebrities. Despite heartfelt attempts to reach out and offer support, he chose to keep his challenges hidden.
His classmate expressed, “It is shocking to me to hear of his passing. He was my secondary school classmate at Mafogram Secondary School.”
