The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the automation of the passport application process is set to commence on January 8, 2024. Nigerians will soon have the option to complete their passport applications online without the need for direct human contact.
Expressing confidence in the initiative, Tunji-Ojo stated during an inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities in Abuja on Monday, that preparations are in place for the system to go live. He emphasized that the upcoming solution aims to provide Nigerians with a seamless and pleasant experience, aligning with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President.
Highlighting the progress made, the minister shared that efforts have been made to minimize human contact in the passport acquisition process. He underscored the dual benefits of the initiative, emphasizing that it will not only bolster the country’s security architecture but also enhance the comfort and convenience of passport applicants.
Tunji-Ojo outlined the government’s commitment to putting an end to the submission of fake documents for passport applications.
In a significant development, he revealed the deployment of document verification officers across all local government areas in the country. These officers will scrutinize passport applications, further ensuring the authenticity of submitted documents.
