Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel was sent off as the Bavarians were eliminated by Manchester City following a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena, as the Cityzens progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
The match saw Erling Haaland score his 48th goal of the season after missing a penalty. The Norwegian striker had already scored in the first leg, which City won 3-0. Despite missing his spot-kick in the first half, Haaland was able to find the back of the net after the break.
Bayern were awarded a penalty later in the game, which Joshua Kimmich converted, ending City’s 10-match winning run. However, it was too little too late for the German giants who crashed out of the competition with a 4-1 aggregate loss.
Pep Guardiola, a former Bayern boss, saw his side seal the victory and set up a last-four tie against holders Real Madrid.
Kingsley Coman was a constant threat down the right for Bayern, who started with a great tempo. Leroy Sane missed a golden opportunity to put the home side ahead after racing clear. Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a professional foul on Haaland, but the decision was overturned as the Norwegian was offside.
Haaland then had another chance to score from the spot, but he put the ball over the crossbar after Upamecano was harshly penalised for handball. City produced a devastating counter-attack to take the lead after Ederson denied Coman from a tight angle. Kevin De Bruyne played a crucial role, setting up Haaland to clinically drill the ball beyond Yann Sommer with his left foot.
Sadio Mane replaced Sane, the pair who were involved in an altercation after the first leg. Mathys Tel had a goal ruled out for offside before Kimmich converted from the spot after Manuel Akanji was penalised for handball. Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea’s manager, was sent off for his touchline antics as Bayern crashed out of the competition.
