The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) concluded its National Delegates Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, with the Congress’s National Executive Committee, NEC, unanimously electing Comrade Joe Ajaero as its new president.
Ajaero, a former vice president, was elected to succeed Ayuba Wabba, whose eight-year term came to an end yesterday.
Ajaero was the sole candidate for the position of NLC president during the convention.
He previously held the position of General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).
He was also a member of the President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s Presidential Committee on Power Sector Reforms.
Wabba was initially elected in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019 for a second term.
He did, however, finish his term yesterday at the 13th quadrennial national delegates conference in Abuja.
During his farewell speech while commissioning a guest house project, named after Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the foremost President of the NLC, Wabba said “unionism was not only about contestations and agitations but also about resource management and investment.”
In his own submission, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is committed to improving the minimum wage of workers to boost productivity.
Mustapha, the special guest of honour at the conference, said the federal government is concerned about improving the welfare of public service, noting that the edifice is a delight for the NLC as well as its workers.
