Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced off against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at Rwanda’s Huye Stadium on Sunday for their second World Cup qualifier. The pressure was on the Super Eagles following a lackluster draw with Lesotho last Thursday.
Zimbabwe took an early lead in the 26th minute when Musona executed a flawless 30-meter free kick, leaving Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, unable to stop it. Despite efforts from Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi, the 2013 AFCON champions struggled to dominate the game, with Zimbabwe holding the upper hand at halftime.
In a strategic move, coach Jose Peseiro made three halftime substitutions, introducing Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Osayi-Samuel for Ola Oina, Onyeka, and Nathan Tella. The changes paid off as Iheanacho netted a crucial goal in the 67th minute, leveling the score with a well-placed shot inside the left post.
Despite relentless efforts from Nigeria in the closing stages, the Warriors stood strong in defense, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
