According to reports, one person has tragically lost his life, and three others have sustained injuries from machete wounds as the military withdrew amidst turmoil from the embattled Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The withdrawal came in the aftermath of reported killings of soldiers on peace and rescue missions in Okuama on March 14, 2024. In retaliation, the military allegedly set fire to the community, exacerbating the already tense situation.
Sources from neighboring Akugbene and Okoloba communities in Bomadi Local Government Area disclosed that the soldiers left abruptly on Tuesday, catching residents off guard.
“We were surprised to see the soldiers pull out yesterday (Tuesday), and some Okuama natives immediately returned to the community,” said a former chairman of Akugbene, who spoke anonymously.
However, the return of some Okuama residents brought no peace as three community members were ambushed and attacked with machetes while trying to travel to Ezebiri community.
Confirming the developments, an individual from a neighboring community corroborated the soldiers’ withdrawal and recounted the violence inflicted on Akugbene youths by armed Okuama returnees.
Tragically, one of the victims who escaped the Okuama assault has succumbed to his injuries.
Responding to the situation, the chairman of Okoloba community, Mr. Clement Koki, emphasized their commitment to peace and reliance on divine protection.
“On our part as a community, we will continue to maintain peace and pray to God Almighty for His protection and support,” he affirmed.
