A 33-year-old security man, Samuel Adeniyi, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after allegedly fatally injuring his girlfriend, Morolake Sunday, with a sledgehammer in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.
The remand followed an order by Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrate Court, where Adeniyi was brought on one count of murder.
According to police prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen, the incident occurred on August 10th, 2023, at No. 33, Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. The defendant reportedly claimed that his girlfriend was unfaithful and never satisfied him sexually.

The court learned that on the day of the incident, the deceased, who worked as a nanny, left the child she was caring for and went to meet another man, allegedly to purchase recharge cards.

Adeniyi, the accused, waited for her to return, and a heated argument ensued when she arrived late. The argument escalated into a fight, during which Adeniyi unintentionally struck her head with a sledgehammer.
Following the altercation, Adeniyi fled the scene, and the deceased was rushed to Mainland General Hospital by her employers. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The charge against Adeniyi read, “That you, Samuel Adeniyi, on August 10th, 2023, around 12 pm, at No. 33 Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Sarah Morolake, aged 25 years by hitting a sledgehammer on her head, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
Adeniyi’s plea was rejected, and the Magistrate ordered his remand in prison custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution. The case has been adjourned until October 10, 2023.
