In a recent development at the Akure High Court, parties involved in the case challenging the appointment of Caretaker Committees for local governments in Ondo State have opted for a possible settlement.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, the court, presided over by Hon Justice Yemi Fasanmi, adjourned the proceedings to January 24, 2024, following the request of the parties to explore mutual agreement and a political solution.
“After listening to counsel to the parties, the court adjourned the case to January 24, 2024 for report of settlement,” the statement read in part.
Quest Times recalls that the legal battle began on November 10, 2023, when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) filed a lawsuit against the Ondo State Government regarding the appointment of Caretaker Committees.
A court order on December 21, 2023, restrained the government from inaugurating or overseeing local government affairs through the Caretaker Committees.
During the recent hearing, the Attorney-General of Ondo State, Sir Charles Titiloye, withdrew his appearance for the Governor and the Ondo State House of Assembly.
Moreover, new counsels, including Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, and Femi Emodamori, stepped in.
Adegboruwa, representing the Governor, also informed the court about discussions with all parties involved, expressing the Governor’s commitment to focusing on peace and development in Ondo State.
Consequently, both Titiloye and the PDP’s counsel, Oyewole Awofade, voiced support for a peaceful resolution.
