Nigeria’s immediate past Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, is expected to arrive in in Sierra Leone today, Saturday, as the Chairman of Commonwealth election observers group for the Country’s general elections.
Osinbajo is expected to lead a team of “distinguished experts” in observing the general elections in Sierra Leone on June 24, the Commonwealth Group has said.
The Secretary-General is said to have constituted the observer group upon invitation from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.
“Prof Osinbajo is a Professor of Law and one of the nation’s leading legal experts, serving as Vice President of Nigeria since May 2015,” the statement reads.
“He will be joined by recognised dignitaries from various fields including, politicians, legal, media, gender and election administration professionals from across the Commonwealth to carry out the task.”
It also informed that the COG will be supported by an 8-member team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, led by the Head of Electoral Support, Mr Linford Andrews.
It will be the fifth time for a Commonwealth Observer Group to observe elections in Sierra Leone, since the end of the civil war in 2002.
However, Prof Osinbajo will address a Press Conference on Monday, June 19, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and will be in the country for the rest of the month, while the Osinbajo-COG will report on the election’s credibility after the exercise.
